To explain a little more clearly, it means that if you wake up and start the work early, you have bigger advantage to succeed. 

Has The Same It Meaning With The Saying, ” First Come, First Served “. ( S Ervice In Order From The Person Who Came First )

Example 1: 

—- I had told you that our company’s policy is only the early bird catches the worm . Why did you wait for the last minute to send your application out? The position is already taken now.

 

Example 2: 

A: Why have you come so early for the year-end sale?

B:  So that I can choose from wider selection and get the best sales!

As you know, the early bird catches the worm.
