• as cool as a cucumber

Meaning: very calm and relaxed

 

Examples:

– Doing yoga has helped me to be as cool as a cucumber in times of trouble.

– I felt nervous at first, but I acted as cool as a cucumber throughout the interview.

 

• a hot potato

Meaning: a controversial issue or a sensitive situation

 

Examples:

– His candidacy became the newest political hot potato.

– The inflation issue is turning into a hot potato topic around the world.

 

• salad days

Meaning: the youthful or peak period of one’s life

 

Examples:

– During my salad days, I watched a lot of anime.

– The salad days of my retirement are great. All I do is take my boat out and fish every day!
